In June this year I had the wonderful privilege of spending a day in mini-bus meandering around Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya. This park is too small to sustain elephants, but we saw plenty of animals up close, including the rare black rhino. I haven’t done much wildlife photography, but I can see why you’d spend a year or so waiting for animals to be in just the right spot. We got lucky with the pic above. The giraffe were actually fighting with each other (not cuddling), standing on the road right in front of the car in front of us. The mini-van had a pop-up roof which allowed for shooting whilst standing up – a terrific idea!
A real feature of Lake Nakuru is the thousands (sometimes millions) of pelican and flamingo that gather at the waters edge. I’d never seen flamingo before, and was captivated by their shape and color.
TECH NOTE: I was shooting with a Nikon D3X 70-200 / with a 2x extender. Can’t say I’m overly fussed with Nikon’s button layout, but hey, who cares really? – the extra focal length and large sensor was brilliant for creating these photographs. (thx Jon!)

Peter, that photograph of the giraffes is wonderful. Gorgeous colours are fabulous!
