Belonging (being-long-in).

Pambula is on the south coast of New South Wales. Whist there’s nothing that’s overly spectacular about the place, the beach and headland has some quite stunning moments if you’re there long enough to really look.

It’s the kind of place that we go back to most years, and so after about 15 years, it’s starting to feel like we’re getting to know each other.

I’ve been contemplating the idea of belonging somewhere this past year. I’m not sure you can belong somewhere without being ‘long in’ that place. But on the other hand, you can spend a lifetime somewhere and still miss out on deeply connecting to it.

Most Aboriginal people I talk with know this already, so the passing on of knowledge across generations builds a strong sense of belonging. This doesn’t discount newcomers from connecting to place, it just takes people like me to slow down a bit and listen.
