My friend Mr. Mojo

One of the challenges I face as a part-time weekend photographer is getting creatively stale and crusty. It’s over 12 months since I’ve been overseas and felt the excitement of discovering new places and fresh environments to get the creative juices flowing.

We managed a week away recently and I took the opportunity of the change in environment to try and create some images. It was tough going. Nothing really inspiring, no exotic landscapes or strange customs to document, just familiar beach, a pier and mainly dull cloudy skies.
Herein lies the creative challenge – my best friend and worst enemy. When closeups of old blokes with wrinkled faces, or grand vistas of snow-capped Himalayas aren’t on the agenda, and I’m stuck with the familiar, my creative mojo can tend to become a tad elusive.

I found myself returning to previous ideas and photos I’ve already shot, and continuing my fascination with skies and clouds. Post production from this week was laborious and somewhat tiresome. These are not a brilliant set of images, but they’re OK as sketches. They’re a reminder for me about hard work, knowing that my old friend Mr. Creative Mojo has not left, probably just hiding for a little bit.
